Prasonisi

The southern tip of Rhodes, an hour's drive south through the wine country and past the small inland villages. Prasonisi (literally: leek-island) is a tied island — a small rocky islet connected to the main island by a narrow sand isthmus that runs underwater in winter and emerges in summer.

Two seas meet on the isthmus — the Aegean on the west side, the Mediterranean on the east. The west side runs flat and choppy with a steady wind year-round, making it the best windsurfing and kitesurfing beach in Greece. The east side is glassy and quiet on the same day. Walk fifty metres across the sand and you change ocean.

Drive south through Gennadi, Lachania, and Mesanagros — small wine villages that have not yet become tourist towns. The lighthouse at the tip dates to 1890. Bring a picnic; the kiosk closes at dusk.
